Season's greetings from Cold Spring Tree farm.
This year marks the 40th year of the start of Cold Spring Tree Farm. In 1984 I bought a 40 acre parcel near my home in Whitewater and began transforming it from cropland to it’s current wooded nature by planting hundreds of shade trees and my first crop of Christmas trees. 9 years later, we sold our first few Christmas trees and we have done so every year since. As a result, we have had the enjoyment of greeting old and new customers to choose and cut their Christmas tree on our farm for the past 31years.
Our operation is truly a "small business", actually more of a hobby for me when I wasn’t being a dentist - an alternative to playing golf or fishing. Consequently, our volume of trees has always been limited and we typically sell out of marketable trees in 2-3 days whereas commercial Christmas tree farms are able to sell everyday from Thanksgiving right up to Christmas Eve. Additionally, a number of drought summers over the last 12 years along with my not planting at all for a couple of years as I pondered finding another way to spend my time in my old age, has resulted in our having probably our smallest crop ever this year. That’s the disappointing news. Now for the good news.
We’re getting back up to full production again with a nice crop of healthy “up and comers”. Even better news, my son-in-law Matt (he’s the big, good looking guy who runs the show, mostly from the baling area behind the shed) has committed to taking the torch from me and not only sustaining but expanding the operation with my help now that I’ve retired and that of his growing children, 11 year old Evy and her 9 year old brother Kian. Matt is a Madison firefighter whose work schedule as such makes his commute to the farm a little more feasible. I’d like to think that part of his decision to run the farm might also be the advantages that an outdoor, nature environment can provide for his kids and their friends (who we might be able to recruit as spring planters and summer shearers in the future). In any case, know that we plan on being around to continue the tradition into the future for both you and us.
So please come and visit us this year. We will be open the Saturday after a later than usual Thanksgiving, Nov. 30. Santa Claus will be here. Whether you find the right tree for you or not, know you’re welcome to pick up last year’s picture and have a new one taken (Santa is bringing a vintage sleigh which should make a nice photo prop), sip a cup of cider near the wood stove or as you stroll the farm in the hope of maintaining a tradition or starting a new one. We truly look forward to seeing you this year and to be able to share your Christmas cheer.
